Behind every company is a story. Ours is no different. It started in the summer of 2001, when Steve Hagerty decided to leave PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC), a company he greatly admired for its people, quality of work, and reputation. After eight years and countless hours on the road, Steve and PwC mutually agreed that he would leave the firm and consult to PwC on select public sector projects – a focus of Steve’s since he graduated with his Master’s in Public Administration from the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs at Syracuse University in 1993 and started his career in PwC’s Office of Government Services.

Soon after making this decision, 9/11 happened. Due to Steve’s prior operational and advisory experience with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) he was asked to serve as the Federal government’s liaison to the FDNY, NYPD, and NYC Office of Emergency Management. A few months later he was asked to lead the management of the $7.4 billion outsourced Public Assistance Program. Steve was in NYC for two years and oversaw a recovery effort that is widely recognized to this day as one of the most efficient, effective, and innovative in FEMA history, with over $7.4 billion allocated and programmatically closed-out in less than 24 months.

In July 2002, Hagerty Consulting incorporated and in March 2003, Steve Hagerty hired his first employee. His first employee—sent to work on a consulting project in Guam— embodied the qualities emulated by Steve and present in all Hagerty professionals— a passion for public sector work, a commitment to excellence in all endeavors, and an unrelenting belief that integrity, innovation, and teamwork, applied everyday, result in sustainable solutions.

During the last seven years, Hagerty Consulting has successfully helped clients navigate the best way forward in times of change, uncertainty, or crisis. This has included reengineering, coordinating, and implementing a $1.3 billion Federal loan program; designing, implementing, and overseeing a $2 billion Federal Grant Quality Control Unit; managing, analyzing, and presenting key data for a $8 billion Federal housing program; developing and implementing performance objectives and measures for a $5 billion Federal operation; facilitating strategic planning, process improvement, and long-term planning workshops with public, private, and non-profit stakeholders; developing strategic plans for Federal agencies and grant recipients; and conducting financial and performance reviews on multi-million dollar, politically sensitive projects.

Today, Hagerty Consulting’s continued focus is to work collaboratively with public sector agencies and select professional service organizations throughout the United States to help them successfully manage large programs and projects, transform operations, improve performance, and prepare for, respond to, and recover from crises with confidence, discipline, teamwork and innovation.
